Day 11.
This one is called The Cartoonist.
This piece isn’t from the adventure book — it’s from the comic strip. The Pico the Parrot comic strip, in which Stooge draws a comic strip of his own called Dolma and Hummus, about two dachshunds who live next door.
Here he is at work on Strip #1, hunched over the page, doing what cartoonists do — which is mostly staring at a blank panel and hoping it fills itself in. Pico is supervising. He is always supervising. He does not draw, but he has opinions about every line, every word, and especially about why two dogs deserve their own strip when there is a perfectly good parrot available.
Stooge does not argue with him about this. Stooge has learned that some arguments are not worth winning.
The strip-within-a-strip was one of the first ideas Fred had for the Pico universe — the notion that a cartoonist’s cartoon character would also be a cartoonist. It is exactly the kind of thing that makes perfect sense if you don’t think about it too hard.
